[community profile] snowflake_challenge Day 4: In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

Hmm. I think I have two main goal categories this year: things related to writing, and things related to my intended move to Minnesota.

So for writing, I want to write at least 75,000 words. Specific story goals are... hmm... right. I want to A) finish a prompt fic for [personal profile] the_rck; B) finish a charity fic for [personal profile] mme_hardy; C) finish a gift story for my friend Susan; D) finish a gift story for my brother Nick; D) finish at least one chapter for "The Guardian in Spite of Herself;" E) participate in NFE, Remix, and Yuletide.

As for moving-related goals, they are: A) sort through my bags of childhood documents and get rid of 95% of them; B) downsize my book collection by... let's say at least 25%; C) downsize my assorted "why do I even own this?" stuff by at least 25%; D) figure out housing in Minnesota; E) figure out how move all my stuff halfway across the country; F) figure out how long I have to live in Minnesota before I can get in-state tuition rates for college (I want a BA, not just an AA); G) find a job in Minnesota; H) actually move to Minnesota; I) figure out if I need to take a specific course to get certified to do Minnesota state taxes for Not the IRS and sign up for it if possible.

These goals are listed in the order I thought of them, not necessarily in order of importance or temporal progression.

Also I would like to find a way to work more regular exercise into my daily routine, but I am beginning to suspect that will require me to find an exercise buddy. (Also that may resolve itself if and when I'm in Minnesota, since I can probably get Nick to bug me into doing cardio or whatever.)

[community profile] snowflake_challenge Day 3: Pimp your favorite communities, fests or challenges!

I feel like everybody knows about Yuletide and the concept of remix challenges, yeah? So I will talk about some smaller ones!

-----
-----

First, there is the Narnia Fic Exchange, aka [community profile] narniaexchange, run by the inimitable [personal profile] snacky and [personal profile] aurilly. This is a small single-fandom exchange run annually in the late summer/early fall, which does exactly what it says on the tin. The quality of fanworks is quite high and people are generous with feedback. I have been participating since 2011 and it is one of the highlights of my fannish year. :D

-----
-----

I also enjoy [community profile] wipbigbang, though I don't participate every year. I feel like their profile blurb explains their purpose better than I could, so I will just quote it here:

Got a rough draft of that fanfic you started writing but then real life made you abandon it? Is it just sitting around in a folder, gathering dust and making you feel guilty every time you glance at the file or think about that pairing? Do you want an opportunity to sit down and finish it like your greatest enemy in Mortal Kombat?

You've come to the right place!

Greetings. We are the WIP Big Bang and our goal is to take the stories we've already started and to finish them by [date subject to change]. We are an all-fandoms-welcome exchange and will have artist claims and everything. It's like a real Big Bang, with a twist. You only need at least 500 words of a story you've already written prior to signing up and the goal isn't a word count* but to finish the thing.

So, are you ready to defeat that WIP?

(*to make it worthwhile for our artists, we do request that stories do end up being over 7500 words!)

And third is the Three Sentence Ficathon! This is a concept more than a fixed challenge; I have participated in iterations hosted by [livejournal.com profile] caramelsilver over on LJ, and by [personal profile] rthstewart here on Dreamwidth, at varying times of the year. The basic idea is like any prompt meme -- people leave prompts (signed or anonymous) and other people fill them -- but the fills can only be three sentences long. It's extremely multi-fandom and open to original fic as well. And if you run over the three-sentence limit? Oh well, stories do that sometimes. ;)

This is a very friendly and low-pressure event. It's also a great way to dabble in fandoms you enjoy but aren't necessarily comfortable enough with to write a full-length story.

I believe [personal profile] rthstewart plans to host another Three Sentence Ficathon iteration starting February 1st, so keep an eye out and come have fun!
edenfalling: stylized black-and-white line art of a sunset over water (Default)
[community profile] snowflake_challenge Day 2: In your own space, talk about your fannish history.

Let's see...

Well, in one sense I have always been fannish, by which I mean I get really into some stories and want to both expand on them/embroider around their edges/play the what-if game (creative fandom), and to know and organize everything about them (curatorial fandom). But I didn't know fan-communities were a thing until I was in college, and I got into them by way of Harry Potter fanfiction, so I have always "done" fandom in online media-fandom/fic-writing style rather than more old-school convention-attending style. To this day I don't think I've met another fan in person, in the sense of getting to know someone online and then meeting up. (I have met people in brickspace and discovered that we were both fannish, but that's different.)

Anyway, around my 20th birthday I was having a depressive episode and had been blocked on my original writing for a while, and I accidentally fell down an internet hole and discovered fanfiction. I believe it was by way of googling stuff about LotR, which led me to Cassandra Claire's Very Secret Diaries, which led me to her HP fic, which led me to HP fandom more generally, and it kind of spiraled on from there.

I wrote my first fic in April 2002 sort of as a meta argument, on the theory that the best way to criticize a badly handled idea is to do it better oneself, and never really got out of the habit. That spiraled into other fandoms as well, obviously.

My first fannish sites were LiveJournal, ff.net, FictionAlley, Yahoo Groups, and... oh god, that was back in the day when there were still half a million personal sites and tiny two- or four-author archives all scattered around the internet. Not that we're all that much more consolidated now, but at least there's AO3. *wry*

I have done my best to sit out most fandom convulsions, since I have long been of the opinion that if any community is making you unhappy, you should move to sections that have fewer assholes.

Eighteen years on, I am still having fun, so I think I'm doing all right. :)

[community profile] snowflake_challenge Day 1: In your own space, introduce yourself!

...You know, I think I'll just copypaste my Dreamwidth profile mini-bio (after a few edits, because I don't think I've updated that in... a while... *wince*). I think it's fairly comprehensive? So:

---------------

General Info: Elizabeth Culmer is female, white, asexual, mostly aromantic, easily distracted, prone to procrastination, addicted to reading, and currently working not-quite-full-time at an office that rents apartments to college students. (She also does taxes from January through April.) Liz has short brown hair, brown eyes, glasses, a tendency to flush heavily for no apparent reason, and an overall terribly average appearance. She has a nice smile, but people rarely manage to photograph it without making her look awkward.

cut for length )

---------------

I'm trying to think if there's anything else particularly relevant that isn't in that bio... Um...

1. Elizabeth Culmer both is and isn't my name, by which I mean those are my two middle names. I do not use my first and last name in a fannish context

2. I am allergic to most raw fruit and vegetables, and also to cats.

3. I live with mild to moderate chronic depression, for which I take an SSRI. I also have (apparently unrelated) periodic depression, where my brain drops me down a well for a couple-three weeks a few times a year. Annoyingly, there is no discernible pattern to those episodes.

4. I am an unenthusiastic cook, but food is necessary to life and sometimes I blog about my culinary efforts.

5. My writing preoccupations tend to be ethics, religion, how to create community, how to balance individual needs with/against communal needs, and female characters getting to be in charge of their own lives.

Yeah, I think that's about it.

23. ) For [livejournal.com profile] silvr_dagger: Inception, Ariadne / or & any, minotaur, written 1/4/17 [AO3 version]

no morality by instinct (200 words exactly)

At the heart of every person's mind is a guardian, territorial and feral, that exacts repayment in blood and pain for all attempted intrusions; they can be evaded, confused, and with time and practice soothed to sleep, but they are never truly tamed; even the people a dreamer loves and trusts the most can still be ripped apart if they grow careless and startle the beast awake.

"Like a minotaur, a proper flesh-eater both maddened and cunning, sent to humble those who grow too proud of their power and cleverness and forget to observe the proper rituals," Eames says with a careless smile, "and you a combination of Daedalus and your own lovely namesake, both to build the maze that traps the monster and to spin the thread that guides us safely through."

"Ah, the benefits of a classical education," Ariadne says wryly, watching the slow and suspicious patrol of the squirrels and songbirds that populate the wilderness she's built in Eames's mind, and wonders whether, when Arthur begins testing her rough-draft maze for flaws, she'll have time to shoot herself awake before she learns what it feels like to die sliced apart by a thousand tiny claws and beaks.

24. ) For [livejournal.com profile] silvr_dagger: Any, any, stealing the sun, written 1/8/17 [AO3 version]

years of drought and famine (225 words)

The clouds are thin in the first years, translucent veils that drape in narrow, scattered bands across the sky: the world's victory sari, people call them, and marvel at the way they seem to catch faint fire at sunset or sunrise, kindling Solstar's white to color within their refracted folds, or to reflect Oceanus's blue-green shine like a dream of verdant growth. But gradually they grow thicker and more frequent, and eventually begin to blot out Solstar's light for hours at a time: an ill-omen, people say now, and wonder in whispers whether perhaps the white witch of the mere cursed the world in her death-throes, or whether the Aeriel was corrupted in her victory; wait, say others, the world was not born in a day, nor can its rebirth be easy; all changes are terrifying even when they bring prosperity and joy at the end of the shift; but patience and trust come hard after generations of the world's slow fall and there are mutterings against the work of Crystalglass, words that might grow into deeds without a countersign, and soon.

And then, at last, in the midst of a daylight darkness, there comes a thing unseen for generations: wrapped in the lowering gloom of oppressive clouds and the fear of the stolen sun, the sky breathes rain once more unto the thirsty earth.

Note: Darkangel Trilogy, obviously. :)

25. ) For [livejournal.com profile] silvr_dagger: Mad Max: Fury Road, any, chasing the sun, written 1/10/17 [AO3 version]

truth, like the sun (175 words)

They say if you drive west fast enough, the sun never sets; drive west fast enough and a single day lasts forever. The true metal, the true V8, they race across the sky in a blaze of glory too bright to look upon with pitiful fleshy eyes, and they will never die; this is Valhalla, the promise and the dream, where everything is caught in an eternity of perfect, howling speed and chrome.

"Flashy and hollow, just like the rest of Joe's lies, and easily turned around if the people here weren't too cowed and beaten down to think," Angharad says when Furiosa relates this bit of warboy lore, words dragged halting and unfamiliar between her teeth like a slow fuel leak she can already tell will leave her stranded and weaponless one of these endless days; "What if you drive east to meet the sun as a partner, instead of west to capture it?" and Furiosa sits in gear-ground silence for the rest of her watch rather than admit she's never thought to ask the question.

26. ) For [livejournal.com profile] silvr_dagger: Any, any, treason, written 1/10/17 [AO3 version]

the treason of pity (250 words)

"If I had it all to do over again," the Dolorosa says to her kismesis as they lie, sweaty, blood-streaked, and sated, in the little nest of torn sailcloth that serves as both pile and bedding ground for the slaves in Mindfang's crew, "I'd tell my son to aim for the Empress instead of the people; she is the Empire, after all, its incarnation as well as its creator; any attack on its power and order is an attack on her, and vice versa. Instead of making ourselves into a threat to put down, we could have shown her how the highbloods have already stolen control out from under her nose -- high treason on a scale to beggar belief -- and tried to set up something better in the wake of the resulting bloodbath; she admires strength and daring, after all, and surely after helping her regain power in practice as well as in theory, we would have convinced her that letting such qualities flourish among lowbloods does not automatically equal chaos."

"If you had it all to do over again, you'd do exactly the same as before," the Demoness says, a thread of weary resignation laced through her habitual scorn, "because I'd go back too, a thousand thousand times if necessary, until I nudged you back onto the path; my master only accepts the timeline that leads to his victory, and as we both know, there are punishments worse than death; do not seek more of them than are already your share."

27. ) For [livejournal.com profile] lignota: Any, any, following smoke and remembering fire, written 1/12/17 [AO3 version]

the seat containing of unweary'd flame (Meet Adoration to My Household Gods) (200 words exactly)

Magic in this world, Susan reflected, was maddening compared to the magic she'd learned in Narnia; if that had been plucking ripe apples from low-hanging boughs in a well-tended orchard, this was wading through thorns and interminable flies in search of stray raspberries not yet discovered by birds or bears, or befriending some higher, older powers in hope of borrowing the bounty of their own hoards.

Still, she fought best from a distance, whether with weapons or words, and as bows were too conspicuous and handguns both too noisy and too illegal (not to mention of limited utility at best against vampires and demons), magic seemed the most immediately useful replacement.

Susan squeezed another drop of blood from her pricked fingertip, repeated once again in halting Greek (blast Peter for laughing when he realized she would have to learn multiple new languages and writing systems to master her new field), "Hestia, queen of hearth and home, strike this spark for your daughter," and smiled when the nest of kindling in her saucer breathed a sigh of smoke; it was no clear, bright flame to strike foes or summon aid, but all things would come with time, and work, and faith.

Note: Part of my One Equal Temper of Heroic Hearts series, which crosses Narnia and BtVS. The halves of the title come from the Orphic Hymn to Hestia (#84, Taylor's translation) and Tennyson's 'Ulysses,' respectively.

28. ) For anonymous: Any, any, tears of flowers, written 1/12/17 [AO3 version]

unwanted blessings (500 words exactly)

"The traditional blessing is for roses and jewels to fall from a poor but kind girl's lips with every word she speaks, but the fairy I met said that made it hard to hold actual conversations and tended to wreck local economies, not to mention the roses prickle something awful on the tongue," Morwen's new roommate, Rosamund, said when their conversation turned to their respective reasons for attending Stokey's Academy.

"Magic does have consequences," Morwen agreed. "Is that why you decided to become a sorceress? To see if you could unpick other traditional causes and effects?"

"Not exactly," Rosamund said with a frustrated scowl. "You see, the fairy still blessed me. She just blessed me to cry flowers instead of speak them, since she said if I was upset enough for tears, that's when I'd actually need flowers to cheer me up. It's a complete nuisance. The flowers are mostly violets and cherry blossom, which thankfully don't prickle, but the petals feel like tissue paper and slugs on my eyeballs, they get absolutely everywhere, and I can't even turn them into a garland or bouquet because they don't have any stems."

"Ugh." Morwen grimaced in sympathy and refilled Rosamund's teacup with the last of her aunt's best company blend that she'd brought with her from home. "That sounds like she was so proud of noticing the problems with the old spell, she didn't bother to make sure her new spell was actually any better."

"Yes, exactly," Rosamund said, and gulped the tea down like water. "That's not the worst part, though. After she cast the flower spell, the fairy said she wouldn't bother trying to make an endless gold spell that wasn't subject to abuse. Instead, she told me that my family already had everything we needed. That sounds nice, right?"

"In a vaguely moralistic and uplifting way," Morwen agreed.

"Very 'be content with your lot and beware the dangers of ambition,' yes," Rosamund said. "But it did sound nice... until we realized it was a spell too, and it was keeping our farm from ever turning a profit."

"How so?"

"If we already had everything we needed, what reason was there for anything to ever change? So nothing does. Everything's frozen the way it was when I met the fairy. We can't clear new fields. We can't rotate crops. We can't even buy a new goat without one of our old goats magically dying for no reason, which means the blessing is actually more of a curse." Rosamund clutched her teacup with white-knuckled fingers and said, so fiercely that Morwen almost expected her eyes to burst into flame, "I came here to learn how to break it. Then I am going to find that fairy, if I have to chase her to the ends of the earth, and I am going to give her a piece of my mind."

"I'll hold her down for you," Morwen promised, and gently pried the teacup from Rosamund's work-roughened hands before it shattered.

Note: Enchanted Forest Chronicles. This one got a little out of hand. Oops? Also, Stokey's Academy is a bit of headcanon I made up when I was giving Morwen backstory for various other fics; it is glancingly mentioned in The Affairs of Dragons and serves as the main setting for A Splash of Color.

29. ) For [livejournal.com profile] lizzie_marie_23: Narnia/Harry Potter, Edmund ~ or / Ginny, hidden corners of the world, written 1/12/17 [AO3 version]

the gate of iron and emerald (375 words)

"This is why you missed the first minute of the battle and left us without our best distance fighter," Edmund said flatly as he continued to inspect his mail shirt for damaged links; "Because you tripped and fell down a hole."

Ginny twirled her wand between her fingers (the way Lucy sometimes spun daggers) and said, in a tone that implied she was attempting forbearance despite great provocation, because despite everything she was fond of him and so forgave his foibles, "Because while I was scouting for ambushes -- it's only chance that the attack came from the west instead of the east, besides which I can't believe you missed a half-dozen giants in land this flat -- I found a locked iron door in an emerald frame in the back wall of this cave, which is so ridiculously out of place that it might as well be screaming it's magical, even without the runes I can't read carved over the lintel, and I was in the middle of testing to see if opening it would be dangerous -- it shouldn't be, by the way, unless you're actually as useless as you act when you're trying to convince people you're young and ignorant, in which case I want a raise since bodyguarding that kind of idiot definitely deserves hazard pay -- but anyway, stop looking at me like I'm a particularly squishable beetle and let's go see what's on the other side."

"I feel that Susan would tell us that interfering with strange magics is a terrible idea, and counsel us instead to both employ caution and remember our mission," Edmund said, pro forma, but this journey to Harfang for truce negotiations had several days' flexibility built in to account for the general disarray of Ettinsmoor after Peter's latest summer war, and he could never live with himself if he turned down a chance to explore one of the hidden corners of the world, thus blatantly presented as both invitation and challenge; and so he motioned his other bodyguard (a grizzled She-Wolf by the name of Skadi) to alert the rest of the party to this turn of events and followed Ginny into the narrow cleft in the earth, to meet what fate awaited them beyond the mysterious door.

30. ) For [livejournal.com profile] silvr_dagger: Beauty and the Beast (Disney or fairy tale; f/f genderswap), Beauty (or Belle)/Beast, roses in the snow, written 1/14/17

the heart that is soonest awake to the flowers (300 words exactly)

Beauty walked the garden paths beside Lady Falcon-in-Flight's massive form, one hand on her spear (as always, for the spells that bound the castle were fraying with age and sometimes spun off monsters) and the other extended to rest lightly on her lady's shoulder: soft fur layered thickly over hard muscle that could drive a body tirelessly for days on end until a chosen quarry was brought to bay -- now twitching restless and unfulfilled as her lady fought to leash a beast's instinct and appetite into a pale mimicry of human form and function, just as she gifted Beauty with garlands and gold instead of the fragile heart Beauty yearned to cradle in her hands and guard from every wound.

"You should hunt, as your body aches to do," Beauty said, as she had each morning since the new moon; "Bring me back a stag or boar, hard-won with your own strength: for blood on snow suits midwinter better than soft, spell-wrought flowers that seek to make all seasons equally a lie."

Her lady tensed, and Beauty bit her lip in expectation of yet another refusal... but this day her lady sighed (a hot, metallic gust of air, like opening the door to her eldest sister's smithy), turned her great head to fix her golden, slit-pupiled eyes on Beauty's own, and said in her rumbling voice, "If you wish a kill, you may make it yourself, but you are right that this body needs to run; I will be your hound and horse together, if you will be my mistress and guide me with a firm hand lest I lose myself to bloodlust; and perhaps when we return we might search the garden until we find amidst the ice a rose that, like you, has remembered its birthright of thorns."

You know, I think these ficlets could count for [community profile] snowflake_challenge Day 7: create a fanwork, if I wanted to make this post multipurpose.

...I believe I will. :)
edenfalling: stylized black-and-white line art of a sunset over water (Default)
[community profile] snowflake_challenge Day 3: Set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

I have various and sundry goals for the year, but I think the biggest ones are... hmm...

Okay.

1. Starting in April, get really serious about finding and applying to full-time jobs, because my current one (though it's nice and has a reasonable hourly wage) is only part-time and therefore has no benefits. I'm keeping it for now because it meshes well with my seasonal tax-prep job, but I want something more stable going forward.

2. Finish at least three chapters of "The Guardian in Spite of Herself," because I failed miserably on that front last year (ugh, depression) and now that I'm feeling less pervasively gray, I would like to get back to more regular writing.

3. Relatedly, write something every day. This can be as little as a single sentence, but I find that I do best in life when I arrange my days (or weeks) to have reliable structures and patterns. Last year I was pretty successful at finally training myself into making daily flossing a reliable habit, so I'd like to try that with writing this year. :)

4. Also relatedly, keep up my daily to-do lists! I have used to-do lists off and on over the years, mostly when I am having particularly bad problems with depression (I always list a few gimmes, like meals, to make sure I have things I can cross off and point to as 'see, I am NOT doing nothing!' evidence), which is why I started up the habit again in 2016, but I've been trying to regularize it a little more, and plan some items a few days in advance, and it's been very helpful in creating a sense of stability when my greater life has felt too big and terrible to ever be within my control. I'd like to keep that up in good times so the habit will be in place whenever bad times roll back again. *wry*

(They always do. These past couple years were only the second time I've had long-term depression; it's been almost entirely situational, which was also the case with my first extended depressive period, so I was pretty sure it would clear up when my life got less chronically stressful. (Spoiler: I was right.) But even when I'm doing well, I still get my blue funks -- I have periodic clinical depression, which means that a few times a year, my brain chemistry randomly conks out for a few weeks -- and I like to have a well-honed set of tools for getting through them.)

5. Continue my decluttering project. I have a bunch more boxes and cupboards that need to be sorted through, and there are still a bunch more clothes I should try on and decide whether I'm ever going to wear them again. I think I'd also like to get a new computer chair, and maybe some kind of shelving unit I can use to store my spare gardening stuff instead of having it randomly stacked on my kitchen floor.

6. Figure out a way to get more physical activity into my life. It needs to be sneaky and low-key, and it needs to be easily slipped into a daily routine rather than a special-purpose event solely about exercise or flexibility. I already walk 1-3 miles a day -- this is easy, because I don't usually have a car and I have an established routine of going to take a photograph of Cascadilla Creek from the Tioga St. bridge every day that this is physically and temporally possible -- but I want to add something a little higher intensity, and maybe also something to improve flexibility since I've been getting a bit stiffer as I get older and that annoys me.

Any advice on the exercise front would be very welcome, btw! :)
edenfalling: stylized black-and-white line art of a sunset over water (Default)
[community profile] snowflake_challenge day 2:

Share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Something that impacted on your consciousness in a way that left its mark on your soul.

Many over the years, but I'm going to say Ursula Le Guin in general, because she did that to me twice. The first was The Tombs of Atuan, which I read when I was... probably eight? Could have been seven or nine, but eight sounds right. I picked it up at random in my school library, and while I wouldn't necessarily say it knocked me for a loop (I was a bit young for that), it was, I think, a very lucky early counter-argument to the reams of male-centric swords-and-horses stories I read subsequently: a quiet voice always there in the bedrock of my mind, saying, "There are other ways."

Some years later (I think I was twelve or thirteen), I read The Dispossessed and that one DID knock me for a loop -- less for the anarchist stuff than for the structure of the thing and how it balances and tie in to the themes and the emotional arc, plus the richness of the worldbuilding in general, and also of course the characters and the very believable-feeling descriptions of alien science as a lived experience. I walked around for a couple weeks with a good quarter of my brain constantly chewing over that book, while I tried to stumble through the rest of my life and not give away how utterly distracted I was.
edenfalling: stylized black-and-white line art of a sunset over water (Default)
I figure I might as well try this [community profile] snowflake_challenge thing, so!

Day 1: In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

I don't think the following fics are necessarily my best work -- and they're certainly not my best-known work -- but they're ones that I feel very positive toward, in this hour, on this day, for whatever reason. :)

1. Cast a Long Shadow (We All Meet in the End): Lily left empty places behind her. A story about family, loss, memory, and the passage of time. Contains familial dysfunction, mention of war and related issues, and offscreen canon deaths. Written for RemixRedux 7, based on Points Where All Shadows Meet, by [livejournal.com profile] osmalic. (Harry Potter, 8,500 words)

2. To Every Thing There Is a Season: Ilgamuth Tarkaan was fourteen when he first rode to war. He was likewise fourteen when he pledged his life and his name to Prince Rabadash, a decision that would shape the rest of his life. Prequel to Out of Season. Contains character death, violence, and moral dilemmas. Written for the 2012 Narnia Big Bang challenge on [livejournal.com profile] narniaexchange. (Chronicles of Narnia, 21,000 words)

3. As the Storm and the Lightning: Galadriel takes up the Ring. Dark. Written for [personal profile] avanti_90 in the early 2015 Three Sentence Ficathon. (LotR, 125 words)

...

Those are all kind of grim, aren't they? Here, have a bonus #4 to leave you on a more cheerful note:

4. In Which the Librarian of the Unseen University Makes an Unexpected Acquaintance: Exactly what it says on the tin. *grin* Written for [personal profile] ailavyn_siniyash in the Three Sentence Ficathon 2013. (Enchanted Forest Chronicles/Discworld, 625 words)
